From their strikingly different vantage points—from Southern California northward to Western Canada and Alaska, plus Hawaii—artists from a range of backgrounds were asked to express their concerns and feelings about the Pacific. “Merely because we live in this part of the world, we as individuals are part of the Pacific ecosystem. On a daily basis we may not recognize the changes that are happening, but they are of vital importance to our world,” write Gteorgia French and Sonja Campbell, co-chairs of the exhibit planning committee.

Shifting Tides debuted in San Jose, California at the time of the 2019 SAQA Conference for the purpose of showcasing the talents of SAQA members living in the greater North Pacific region. The show will tour seven participating Regions, bringing to public view the innovative contemporary art that SAQA stands for. Juror: Ann Johnston, Lake Oswego, Oregon.
Created as a group exhibit to shine a light on the issues facing the Pacific Ocean today, Shifting Tides is a collection of work by 45 artists chosen from the seven Pacific-facing regions of SAQA. Curated by renowned textile artist Ann Johnston, the exhibit offers a variation of style and context about the plight of oceans and the communities they support.
The SAQA Local Connections group for the Greater Sacramento/Foothills Region issued a call to artists from our Northern California and Nevada region for a non-juried showcase exhibit for art quilts made during the pandemic. The exhibit of forty 12″ x 12″ art quilts opened at the Blue Line Arts Gallery in Roseville, CA on November 20, 2020. See images of the individual quilts on the Feature Foyer Gallery page.

This exhibit focuses on work inspired as a result of the pandemic and explores how artists have grappled with sheltering at home, for example social distancing, isolation, loss, grief and the opportunities for more intense creative expression made possible by the slower pace of life.

The Art Quilts reception on Saturday January 11, 2020 at Sebastopol Center for the Arts was a huge success with over 200 attending.

This International Juried Exhibition is a collaboration between Sebastopol Center for the Arts (SCA) & Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). “Art Quilts” are art objects that reference stitched layered sculptures, using modern and/or traditional quilting techniques. Join the artists for wine and refreshments at the opening reception and enjoy this collection of beautiful, thought-provoking, cutting-edge artwork. The exhibition will be on display from January 10 through February 16, 2020.
Additionaly, the SAQA North Bay Local organized a showcase exhibit How Do They Do That? which runs concurrently with the Art Quilt exhibit.

Our SAQA booth at the Pacific International Quilt Festival (PIQF) was a great success!
Northern California/Nevada Regional Rep, Sonja Campbell, was there every day and reported “PIQF is always special to me because I have the opportunity to talk with the members staffing the booth. We also get to see members who drop by to say hello. The best part is prospective members that look at our trunk show and know they have found their people. We had 25 people that either joined or renewed their memberships.”

Forty two Northern California/Northern Nevada SAQA fiber artists interpreted the diversity, illusions, realities, and hopes to depict the complexity of the Golden State. The show opened at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah, CA on August 17. The opening was attended by over 300 people.

Fiber Art from the Seven Pacific Regions of Studio Art Quilt Associates. Shifting Tides is presented as a world premier traveling exhibition in collaboration with Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA).
Shifting Tides opened in San Jose, at Works San Jose. It was successful in so many ways. We had large crowds over the two weeks. The show was at Works/San Jose until May 5, 2019. We sold a high volume of catalogs and three quilts. The Exhibition is now moving to Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum, La Conner, Washington. It will be there from June 26- September 29, 2019. Catalogs will be available at all meetings.
